Smash & Grab: The Rebel Lens of Mike Jones

With little more than a 16-mm camera and a bedrock love of place, renegade filmmaker Mike Jones broke the trail for Newfoundland’s cultural renaissance. Through never-before-seen footage of the comedic chaos that was CODCO, Smash and Grab: The Rebel Lens of Mike Jones summons this chapter of Canada’s hilarious history in a joyful journey of rediscovery featuring Mary Walsh, Cathy Jones, Rick Mercer and more. The soundtrack for the documentary was composed by Ian Foster.

Travelogue

There are many ways you could listen to Travelogue. While doing the dishes. In earbuds while walking. On a plane, drowning out a screaming baby. Intently. Absentmindedly. At home under a blanket. On your own journey.

And you can take whatever you want from it. It can be a complete, single track experience (that’s how it was made, mixed and mastered). It can also be a few different fragments that you like and replay over and over. You can play out scenes in your head, or let it drift past on its own.

No matter how you listen, if you’re reading this, I assume you have or are about to, and I thank you for it.

– Ian.

Psst.

That was all the usual stuff people like to hear. Now, for the nerds like me:

You’ll find a list of things below that are in this album, as least as far as I’m concerned. I came home from Greece with all of this stuff in my head, then spent 2.5 weeks in my studio. I clipped out my favourite field recordings I’d made, chose instruments around places and moods, and used my piano, classical guitar, and various hard and soft synths and sampled instruments to write what I feel is a sonic journal of my time with my partner Nancy in a distant, mystical and magical place. Oh, and I used the Moog DFAM a few times. Didn’t think I’d g It’s all rolling around explicitly or implicitly in the music:

  • Birds
  • Greek men yelling at each other
  • The Delphic hymns
  • Rooftop bars in Naxos
  • The Odyssey
  • Workers cleaning up Leonard Cohen’s house on Hydra
  • Cats
  • Birds again
  • The Colossus of Maroussi by Henry Miller
  • The quiet town of Arachova
  • The Athens subway
  • Bird on a Wire
  • Bad cocktails
  • Many more cats
  • Ferries and ports
  • The various weights we carry with us as we travel

Written, produced and engineered by Ian Foster
Mixed and mastered by Scott Hammond at the Blue Room

Thanks to Nancy. My father, Steve.
Thanks to Dave Shears, Melanie O’Brien, Ruha Ratnam, and Lynette Adams for your ears.
